As you’ve learned in class, program music is music that has a title and is associated with an idea, a place, scene, person or feeling. The following musical excerpts are examples of program music. For this assignment, you need to:
1. Click on the audio file of each example. Listen to the music and write down your thoughts on the answer sheet (download the file below). *Do not click on REVEAL TITLE yet!
Do you picture anything? A place, a person, a feeling? Does it make you feel something? Does it remind you of something? Write everything that you think of.
2. AFTER you’ve written your response, click on REVEAL TITLE to learn the title of the piece and information about it.
3. Write your thoughts after learning the title in your answer sheet.
Does this change your view of the piece? Do you now picture something different? Does the music really fit the title? Or were your previous ideas better? How efficient do you think it is to give a title to a piece of music? Is the composer successful in conveying his idea with the music?
